Post-July 4th

While we didn't do anything particularly exciting for the 4th, on the 5th we drove back down to Newport, RI, to use the other half of our tickets to see the mansions. This time we decided to visit Marble House.

This was the house was also built by third-generation Vanderbilts. It was a bit less gaudy than the Breakers was. There was one room in particular that was done in a Gothic style that we liked quite a bit. However, Alva Vanderbilt, the wife who was gifted the house for a 39th birthday present was a bit scary. The tour made it sound like she divorced her husband just to divorce him. And ultimately she moved into the house of her second husband, so this mansion became a glorified storage unit.

There was a replica of the Chinese tea house around the back of the house, and the views out to the harbor were really nice.

It was a beautiful day and we had a great time.
