Patriot's Day - aka Boston Marathon Day

Today was Patriot's Day in Massachusetts. It's the state holiday on the day the Boston Marathon is run. I took the day off work and Dan and I drove down to Newport, Rhode Island. Newport is home to some impressive "gilded age" mansions. We visited and toured The Breakers, which was the "summer cottage" of the Vanderbilt family. The house was built in 1895 and is a 70 room Italian Renaissance-style mansion. The first floor was built to impress. Everywhere you looked things were either carved or gilded. Unfortunately, flash photography was not allowed inside the building, in order to preserve things for the future. We were allowed to take pictures of the exterior though.

Maybe I'm easily impressed, but before we even entered the mansion I was taken by the size and age of this tree. We plan to go back to Newport at some point during the summer, and I can't wait to see what it looks like when it's in leaf!
Here is what the mansion looks like as you approach it up the drive. As creepy as this picture turned out, it shows some of the detail put into construction. This is one of the bronze light posts out front.
The side gardens must be really pretty once full spring and summer hit. This is the view from the back porch of the house, out across the ocean. It was cold and really windy outside, but we did manage to get a few pictures of us.
